Facts and Trivia: In 1862,
Richard Gatling, of Indianapolis,
invented the rapid-fire machine gun. The
first professional baseball game was
played in Fort Wayne on May 4, 1871. The
first long-distance auto race in the U.
S. was held May 30, 1911, at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway. During WWII
the P-47 fighter-plane was manufactured
in Evansville at Republic Aviation. The
Saturday Evening Post is published in
Indianapolis.
